Mozilla is attempting to set a world record for downloading FireFox, good luck with that! The problem I see is that Adobe Flash Player has seen installation spikes daily that go into the 14 Million to 25 Million per day range. We report averages on all our player stats but never the spikes in traffic. It makes me think that we should be much more open about our download statistics regarding Flash Player.Maybe we should just just submit Adobe Flash Player installs for the World Record and resubmit it as spikes occur.
Although even this gets sticky. If they count Mozilla FireFox 3 downloads according to file size, each download is 12MB average (MAC/WIN/LIN) where Flash Player is far smaller. It gets even worse when you think about auto-update a download, I am sure the OS teams at Microsoft Update see lots of issues.

You need to make it official, this is history and the FP baby worth it!
When I first heard about this "attempt" by Mozilla I couldn't believe Adobe never set it before. (Read: http://k2xl.com/wordpress/2008/05/30/firefox-3-release-world-record-what-world-record/)
I'm sure Adobe (or Macromedia when it was Flash 7 or 8) has the current record. Technically Mozilla is setting a record, but they probably won't break one.
why don't they make it available via bittorrent on the main page (or maybe as an alt download)? this way the more the downloaders the more the speed :)
Valid point, however I don't think Firefox 3 is prompting users to upgrade and unlike Flash, most sites will not be breaking entirely because users don't have the latest browser install.
i'm surprised adobe and adobe guys keep boasting about the smaller size of the player. the fact is that your player/plugin size is growing day by day from few 100kbs to a few MBs now!! The truth is you provide a subset of functionalities that many earlier plugins provided (for example you guys support only three or four codecs when it comes to video, there is least of support for external developer to pitch in their decoding and stuff). whatever, just thought to inform you about the reality. I won't be surprised if few years down the line, you become as heavy a download like JRE/JDK (considering the move adobe is making towards a desktop application platform from web).
Mozilla only counts manual downloads; automatic updates have been disabled (I tried auto-updating from RC3, but failed repeatedly).
AFAIK, most of the Flash downloads are automatic updates, not human-initiated ones.
Automated downloads don't count. This is 8 million people actually choosing to go to a Web site and download and install a new application.
I have to agree with most of the posters here. A person can still browse the web with virtually any browser they'd prefer. Heck, they can even opt to stay with IE. The point is, they DON'T need to download FF3. But the flash player? "Good luck with that." Your sites can't function properly if you don't have the right player. That makes it mandatory to download one. Adobe is in a very different arena than Firefox. It's like saying antivirus software should also gun for a record because everyone is downloading "updates" everyday.
