I have been a huge fan of Alex Bradley's work on KineticFusion. This round trip SWF to XML compiler/decompiler is an amazing product and keeps getting better. Version 3 is worth a deeper look. Actually with this release the product makes the leap to a productive XML development tool. Prior to this the XML was very verbose and supported the entire low level SWF format. With version 3 you can create higher level XML with event support and MXML like functionality.

Nice work Alex, KF has come a long way!

Cheers,

Ted :)

It sure has come a long way hasn't it? I know KF has saved me more times than I can count, to compare two swfs that look identical but aren't under the hood, to modify a swf for which I lost the source, to 'debug' certain 'components' *cough* and so on. It just gets more useful every day. I don't see it competing with Flex or Laszlo for that matter anytime soon though. Rather it does seem like it could become a drop-in replacement for swfmill. In any case that's certainly good news.

Thanks for the kinds words, Ted. I'm hoping to move to a more iterative development cycle rather than the head-down approach of the last year. Unfortunately, it just seem like there was a lot of work to be done in getting the internals right.

I appreciate Patrick's comment and I recognise that I don't have the resources or the Flash application expertise to compete with Flex/Laszlo. This was the driving reason to ensure that the full RVML API and source code was available to anyone to write external tag libraries to create arbitrary XUL-like dialects. Ideally these sort of projects should be Open-Source and community driven - when I find time I'll have to look into the mechanisms for this.
